Queen’s Wigs in Yuba City stars a mother-and-daughter duo | News | appeal-democrat.com

Teosha Hall has always been around a hair salon.

“Even when (my mom) was younger and didn’t have her license, she did hair at home,” Hall said. “So all these clients watched me grow up. So I could come in here and talk about whatever to them, or they could talk about whatever to me – it’s all like family – that’s probably the best part about it.”

For Hall, styling hair is like riding a bike; seeing as she grew up around it.

“I had the doll heads from day one. So it was like, let’s try a twisty, let’s try a braid. OK, let’s try this hairstyle,” Hall said. “I like to try new hairstyles, so that’s like trying a new recipe. I want to do the latest thing; I want to see what it will look like or if I can do it.”

Hall explained that her hair was always nice, and her friends always knew that she was going to do hair. They predicted correctly, seeing as Hall now works in the same workplace as her mom, Tanjanica Marks, who owns the Queen’s Wigs hair salon in Yuba City.

“In the beginning, I just did it for fun, and then it became like, alright then, I guess I’m going to go to school for it,” Hall said. “The beauty industry is never going to die.”

Beyond the enduring nature of the industry, Hall just finds it rewarding to make the customers at Queen’s Wigs feel good. Queen’s Wigs is a full-service salon specializing in all hair types, according to Marks. It offers wigs, braiding, weaving, extensions, haircuts and hair coloring.

The business's space seems to have a chill vibe. Music plays in the background; the music is sometimes early 2000s R&B. They also play some hip-hop and rap – it depends on the day.

“I just like light and flowy,” Marks said. “Whatever motivates us – that’s true.”

Adding to the atmosphere, the salon displays many wigs, and a light pink wall color adds a subtle pop. Mom wanted to incorporate a burgundy-ish color, but Hall was not having that.

“Imagine that,” Hall laughed.

Hall admitted that she can be on the blunt side sometimes.

“She keeps it real,” Marks explained. “She calls me delusional sometimes. I might be, but only she can say that.”

According to Hall, they have fun working together and benefit from each other’s ideas.

Queen’s Wigs is located at 1747 Live Oak Boulevard, Suite F, in Yuba City. Queen’s Wigs moved to that location this summer, although Marks has had her own business for a long time.

“It gives me independence and a space to create in a space that’s my own,” Marks said. “Ultimately, I’ve always been my own boss.”
